All the people followed him up, playing flutes and celebrating so loudly they made the ground shake. ¹ 

The earth heaved and shook; ¹  the roots of the mountains ²  trembled; ³  they heaved because he was angry.

For this reason we do not fear ¹  when the earth shakes, ²  and the mountains tumble into the depths of the sea, ³ 

Grab me and rescue me from the power of foreigners, ¹  who speak lies, and make false promises. ² 

¹ On a bare hill raise a signal flag, shout to them, wave your hand, so they might enter the gates of the princes!

Those who see you stare at you, they look at you carefully, thinking: ¹  “Is this the man who shook the earth, the one who made kingdoms tremble?

My heart palpitates, ¹  I shake in fear; ²  the twilight I desired has brought me terror.

Tremble, you complacent ones! Shake with fear, you carefree ones! Strip off your clothes and expose yourselves – put sackcloth on your waist! ¹ 

Raise a signal flag that tells people to go to Zion. ¹  Run for safety! Do not delay! For I am about to bring disaster out of the north. It will bring great destruction. ² 

They are dismayed because the ground is cracked ¹  because there has been no rain in the land. The farmers, too, are dismayed and bury their faces in their hands.

The people of the earth will quake when they hear of their downfall. ¹  Their cries of anguish will be heard all the way to the Gulf of Aqaba. ² 

You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and prophesy against it.

because they will lack bread and water. Each one will be terrified, and they will rot for their iniquity. ¹ 

The traders among the peoples hiss at you; you have become a horror, and will be no more.’”

I will disturb ¹  many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, among countries you do not know.

When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. ¹  The great deep ²  shouts out; it lifts its hands high. ³ 

And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing. ¹  But if anyone swears by the gift on it he is bound by the oath.’

For David says about him, ‘I saw the Lord always in front of me, ¹  for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken.

So the Lord is furious ¹  with his people; he lifts ²  his hand and strikes them. The mountains shake, and corpses lie like manure ³  in the middle of the streets. Despite all this, his anger does not subside, and his hand is ready to strike again. ⁴ 

Does an ax exalt itself over the one who wields it, or a saw magnify itself over the one who cuts with it? ¹  As if a scepter should brandish the one who raises it, or a staff should lift up what is not made of wood!
