Look, the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, is ready to cut off the branches with terrifying power. ¹  The tallest trees ²  will be cut down, the loftiest ones will be brought low.

But if the animals were weaker, he did not set the branches there. ¹  So the weaker animals ended up belonging to Laban ²  and the stronger animals to Jacob.

He made the lampstand of pure gold. He made the lampstand of hammered metal; its base and its shaft, its cups, its buds, and its blossoms were from the same piece. ¹ 

“But there is hope for ¹  a tree: ²  If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.

The Lord is God and he has delivered us. ¹  Tie the offering ²  with ropes to the horns of the altar! ³ 

The canals ¹  will stink; ²  the streams of Egypt will trickle and then dry up; the bulrushes and reeds will decay,

The time is coming when Jacob will take root; ¹  Israel will blossom and grow branches. The produce ²  will fill the surface of the world. ³ 

“Son of man, of all the woody branches among the trees of the forest, what happens to the wood of the vine? ¹ 

And even they – if they do not continue in their unbelief – will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

The lotus trees conceal it in their ¹  shadow; the poplars by the stream conceal it.

On the poplars in her midst we hang our harps,

When its branches get brittle, ¹  they break; women come and use them for kindling. ²  For these people lack understanding, ³  therefore the one who made them has no compassion on them; the one who formed them has no mercy on them.

“Who is this that rises like the Nile, like its streams ¹  turbulent at flood stage?

For Israel’s sake I destroyed the Amorites. ¹  They were as tall as cedars ²  and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches ³  and their roots in the ground. ⁴ 

Jonah left the city and sat down east ¹  of it. ²  He made a shelter for himself there and sat down under it in the shade to see what would happen to the city. ³ 

The house he builds is as fragile as a moth’s cocoon, ¹  like a hut ²  that a watchman has made.

God says, ¹  “I will bring down all the power of the wicked; the godly will be victorious.” ² 

You cleared the ground for it; ¹  it took root, ²  and filled the land.

Surely they will be totally consumed ¹  like ²  entangled thorn bushes, ³  like the drink of drunkards, ⁴  like very ⁵  dry stubble.

I ¹  turned to see whose voice was speaking to me, ²  and when I did so, ³  I saw seven golden lampstands,
