therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the sovereign Lord: This is what the sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys, and to the desolate ruins and the abandoned cities that have become prey and an object of derision to the rest of the nations round about –

Gaal saw the men ¹  and said to Zebul, “Look, men are coming down from the tops of the hills.” But Zebul said to him, “You are seeing the shadows on the hills – it just looks like men.” ² 

In a good pasture I will feed them; the mountain heights of Israel will be their pasture. There they will lie down in a lush ¹  pasture, and they will feed on rich grass on the mountains of Israel.

I keep track of ¹  every bird in the hills, and the insects ²  of the field are mine.

The waters kept on receding ¹  until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month, the tops of the mountains became visible. ² 

The earth heaved and shook; ¹  the roots of the mountains ²  trembled; ³  they heaved because he was angry.

Their survivors will escape to the mountains and become like doves of the valleys; all of them will moan – each one for his iniquity.

Let the rivers clap their hands! Let the mountains sing in unison

He turns springs into streams; ¹  they flow between the mountains.

He takes his battle position ¹  and shakes ²  the earth; with a mere look he frightens ³  the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; ⁴  the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. ⁵ 

They are soaked by mountain rains and huddle ¹  in the rocks because they lack shelter.

The depths of the earth are in his hand, ¹  and the mountain peaks belong to him.

Once again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria. ¹  Those who plant them will once again enjoy their fruit. ² 

The waters completely inundated ¹  the earth so that even ²  all the high mountains under the entire sky were covered.

Each night and every day among the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

For a fire has been kindled by my anger, and it burns to lowest Sheol; ¹  it consumes the earth and its produce, and ignites the foundations of the mountains.

¹ There is a loud noise on the mountains – it sounds like a large army! ²  There is great commotion among the kingdoms ³  – nations are being assembled! The Lord who commands armies is mustering forces for battle.

“Look, I am making you like ¹  a sharp threshing sledge, new and double-edged. ²  You will thresh the mountains and crush them; you will make the hills like straw. ³ 

Shout for joy, O sky! ¹  Rejoice, O earth! Let the mountains give a joyful shout! For the Lord consoles his people and shows compassion to the ²  oppressed.

How delightful it is to see approaching over the mountains ¹  the feet of a messenger who announces peace, a messenger who brings good news, who announces deliverance, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” ²
