You yourselves are our letter, ¹  written on our hearts, known and read by everyone,

and to esteem them most highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

Bunch yourselves together like straw, ¹  you undesirable ²  nation,

I am speaking to thoughtful people. Consider what I say.

For since you are so wise, you put up with ¹  fools gladly.

And the incense that you are to make, you must not make for yourselves using the same recipe; it is to be most holy to you, belonging to the Lord.

I say this ¹  so you will not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the form of any kind of figure. This includes the likeness of a human male or female,

You will pick up your images ¹  of Sikkuth, ²  your king, ³  and Kiyyun, ⁴  your star god, which you made for yourselves,

‘No,’ they replied. ¹  ‘There won’t be enough for you and for us. Go instead to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

Woe to you experts in religious law! You have taken away ¹  the key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered ²  those who were going in.”

When ¹  he saw them he said, “Go ²  and show yourselves to the priests.” ³  And ⁴  as they went along, they were cleansed.

Intermarry with us. ¹  Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves. ² 

When they sprout leaves, you see ¹  for yourselves and know that summer is now near.

For you know quite well that the day of the Lord ¹  will come in the same way as a thief in the night. ² 

But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves.

“‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things, for the nations which I am about to drive out before you ¹  have been defiled with all these things.

You are children ¹  of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald ²  for the sake of the dead.

Prepare yourselves by your families according to your divisions, as instructed ¹  by King David of Israel and his son Solomon.

“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth ¹  and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
