Guard against self-deception, each of you. ¹  If someone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become foolish so that he can become wise.

But Moses said, ¹  “O ²  my Lord, please send anyone else whom you wish to send!” ³ 

If you have no desire ¹  to worship ²  the Lord, choose today whom you will worship, ³  whether it be the gods whom your ancestors ⁴  worshiped ⁵  beyond the Euphrates, ⁶  or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my family ⁷  will worship ⁸  the Lord!”

Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard so I can make a vegetable garden out of it, for it is adjacent to my palace. I will give you an even better vineyard in its place, or if you prefer, ¹  I will pay you silver for it.” ² 

so that I ¹  would prefer ²  strangling, ³  and ⁴  death ⁵  more ⁶  than life. ⁷ 

A club is counted ¹  as a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.

They invade like lumberjacks swinging their axes in a thick forest. ¹

They look like horses; ¹  they charge ahead like war horses.

Therefore do not let what you consider good ¹  be spoken of as evil.

For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom,

So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall.

The watchman said, “It appears to me that the first runner is Ahimaaz ¹  son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and he comes with good news.”

The godly ¹  perish, but no one cares. ²  Honest people disappear, ³  when no one ⁴  minds ⁵  that the godly ⁶  disappear ⁷  because of ⁸  evil. ⁹ 

“I made the earth and the people and animals on it by my mighty power and great strength, ¹  and I give it to whomever I see fit. ² 

So listen carefully, ¹  for whoever has will be given more, but ²  whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has ³  will be taken from him.”

Then Abimelech said, “Look, my land is before you; live wherever you please.” ¹ 

O Lord, ¹  I have built a lofty temple for you, a place where you can live permanently.”

Terrifying sounds fill ¹  his ears; in a time of peace marauders ²  attack him.
