even before they were born or had done anything good or bad (so that God’s purpose in election ¹  would stand, not by works but by ²  his calling) ³  –

When he calls out to me, I will answer him. I will be with him when he is in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him honor.

“Do not say, ‘Conspiracy,’ every time these people say the word. ¹  Don’t be afraid of what scares them; don’t be terrified.

Listen! The Lord is calling ¹  to the city! It is wise to respect your authority, O Lord! ²  Listen, O nation, and those assembled in the city! ³

For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” ¹

Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?

“To you, O people, ¹  I call out, and my voice calls ²  to all mankind. ³ 

¹  it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger,” ² 

Let each one remain in that situation in life ¹  in which he was called.

But ¹  Jesus ²  said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in men’s eyes, ³  but God knows your hearts. For what is highly prized ⁴  among men is utterly detestable ⁵  in God’s sight.

then what will I do when God confronts me in judgment; ¹  when he intervenes, ²  how will I respond to him?

A psalm of Asaph. God stands in ²  the assembly of El; ³  in the midst of the gods ⁴  he renders judgment. ⁵ 

The way of the Lord ¹  is like ²  a stronghold for the upright, ³  but it is destruction ⁴  to evildoers. ⁵
