Your anger overwhelms me; ¹  your terrors destroy me.

He made it dark; ¹  they did not disobey his orders. ² 

They sat in utter darkness, ¹  bound in painful iron chains, ² 

He will be beaten and despised, ¹  and his reproach will not be wiped away; ² 

I can clothe the sky in darkness; I can cover it with sackcloth.”

He drove me into captivity ¹  and made me walk ²  in darkness and not light.

¹ O Lord, reflect on ²  what has happened to us; consider ³  and look at ⁴  our disgrace.

Wail ¹  like a young virgin ²  clothed in sackcloth, lamenting the death of ³  her husband-to-be. ⁴ 

The sun and moon are darkened; the stars withhold ¹  their brightness.

Certainly ¹  caraway seed is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin seed. ²  Certainly caraway seed is beaten with a stick, and cumin seed with a flail.

Now there were these prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch: ¹  Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, ²  Lucius the Cyrenian, ³  Manaen (a close friend of Herod ⁴  the tetrarch ⁵  from childhood ⁶ ) and Saul.

Now the Spirit of the Lord had turned away from Saul, and an evil spirit ¹  from the Lord tormented him.

He shrouded himself in darkness, ¹  in thick rain clouds. ² 

That day ¹  – let it be darkness; ²  let not God on high regard ³  it, nor let light shine ⁴  on it!

before I depart, never to return, ¹  to the land of darkness and the deepest shadow, ²
