The Lord says, “Do not start following pagan religious practices. ¹  Do not be in awe of signs that occur ²  in the sky even though the nations hold them in awe.

Afterward, the Israelites will turn and seek the Lord their God and their Davidic king. ¹  Then they will submit to the Lord in fear and receive his blessings ²  in the future. ³ 

Now when the centurion ¹  and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said, “Truly this one was God’s Son!”

because Herod stood in awe of ¹  John and protected him, since he knew that John ²  was a righteous and holy man. When Herod ³  heard him, he was thoroughly baffled, ⁴  and yet ⁵  he liked to listen to John. ⁶ 

Then ¹  he said to them, “Where is your faith?” ²  But they were afraid and amazed, ³  saying to one another, “Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the water, ⁴  and they obey him!”

So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence, ¹ 

For the Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise, he is more awesome than ¹  all gods.

Look, the Lord takes notice of his loyal followers, ¹  those who wait for him to demonstrate his faithfulness ² 

You are awesome! Yes, you! Who can withstand your intense anger? ¹ 

As a father has compassion on his children, ¹  so the Lord has compassion on his faithful followers. ² 

They will proclaim ¹  the power of your awesome acts! I will declare your great deeds!

Just as there is futility in many dreams, so also in many words. ¹  Therefore, fear God!

And the men ¹  were amazed and said, ²  “What sort of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him!” ³ 

For ¹  Peter ²  and all who were with him were astonished ³  at the catch of fish that they had taken,

Great ¹  fear gripped ²  the whole church ³  and all who heard about these things.

And they paid close attention to him because he had amazed them for a long time with his magic.

A person should examine himself first, ¹  and in this way ²  let him eat the bread and drink of the cup.

Those guilty of sin ¹  must be rebuked ²  before all, ³  as a warning to the rest. ⁴ 

Lord, I have heard the report of what you did; ¹  I am awed, ²  Lord, by what you accomplished. ³  In our time ⁴  repeat those deeds; ⁵  in our time reveal them again. ⁶  But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy! ⁷ 

He was afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! This is nothing else than the house of God! This is the gate of heaven!”
