Simon ¹  (whom he named Peter), and his brother Andrew; and James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, ² 

For John the Baptist has come ¹  eating no bread and drinking no wine, ²  and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ ³ 

Jesus ¹  sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover ²  for us to eat.” ³ 

John answered them, ¹  “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize, ² 

Then ¹  John testified, ²  “I saw the Spirit descending like a dove ³  from heaven, ⁴  and it remained on him. ⁵ 

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said ¹  and followed Jesus. ² 

John replied, ¹  “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

Now when Jesus ¹  knew that the Pharisees ²  had heard that he ³  was winning ⁴  and baptizing more disciples than John

Jesus ¹  went back across the Jordan River ²  again to the place where John ³  had been baptizing at an earlier time, ⁴  and he stayed there.

For ¹  John baptized with water, but you ²  will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time ¹  for prayer, ²  at three o’clock in the afternoon. ³ 

When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple courts, ¹  he asked them for money. ² 

Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest’s family. ¹ 

you know what happened throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John announced: ¹ 

Before ¹  Jesus ²  arrived, John ³  had proclaimed a baptism for repentance ⁴  to all the people of Israel.

When ¹  John’s messengers had gone, Jesus ²  began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness ³  to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁴ 

But if we say, ‘From people,’ we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet.”

Although ¹  Herod ²  wanted to kill John, ³  he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.

So ¹  the king sent an executioner at once to bring John’s ²  head, and he went and beheaded John in prison.

Now ¹  this was ²  John’s ³  testimony ⁴  when the Jewish leaders ⁵  sent ⁶  priests and Levites from Jerusalem ⁷  to ask him, “Who are you?” ⁸
