Remember the whole way by which he ¹  has brought you these forty years through the desert ²  so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.

I also thought to myself, “It is ¹  for the sake of people, ²  so God can clearly ³  show ⁴  them that they are like animals.

(Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against ¹  him.) ²  Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. ³ 

And that you visit ¹  them every morning, and try ²  them every moment? ³ 

For ¹  you, O God, tested us; you purified us like refined silver.

They willfully challenged God ¹  by asking for food to satisfy their appetite.

until the time when his prediction ¹  came true. The Lord’s word ²  proved him right. ³ 

So ¹  when the devil ²  had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time. ³ 

So the people contended ¹  with Moses, and they said, “Give us water to drink!” ²  Moses said to them, “Why do you contend ³  with me? Why do you test ⁴  the Lord?”

So I said to the Lord, ¹  “O Lord who rules over all, ²  you are a just judge! You examine people’s hearts and minds. ³  I want to see you pay them back for what they have done because I trust you to vindicate my cause.” ⁴ 

Even some of the wise will stumble, resulting in their refinement, purification, and cleansing until the time of the end, for it is still for the appointed time.

But he saw through their hypocrisy and said ¹  to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius ²  and let me look at it.”

You must not put the Lord your God to the test as you did at Massah. ¹ 

Moreover, you continued to provoke the Lord at Taberah, ¹  Massah, ²  and Kibroth-Hattaavah. ³ 

He gives me the agility of a deer; ¹  he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. ² 

Yet they challenged and defied ¹  the sovereign God, ²  and did not obey ³  his commands. ⁴ 

In the wilderness they had an insatiable craving ¹  for meat; ²  they challenged God ³  in the desert.

I know, Lord, that your regulations ¹  are just. You disciplined me because of your faithful devotion to me. ² 

Look, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have purified you ¹  in the furnace of misery.

When they stumble, they will be granted some help. But many will unite with them deceitfully.
