Then Samuel talked to the people about how the kingship would work. ¹  He wrote it all down on a scroll and set it before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away to their homes.

But Jacob said, “Swear an oath to me now.” ¹  So Esau ²  swore an oath to him and sold his birthright ³  to Jacob.

For Job says, ‘I am innocent, ¹  but God turns away my right.

If ¹  someone pampers his servant from youth, he will be a weakling ²  in the end.

to keep the poor from getting fair treatment, and to deprive ¹  the oppressed among my people of justice, so they can steal what widows own, and loot what belongs to orphans. ² 

that you were at that time without the Messiah, ¹  alienated from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, ²  having no hope and without God in the world.

“As surely as God lives, ¹  who has denied me justice, ²  the Almighty, who has made my life bitter ³  –

vindicates the oppressed, ¹  and gives food to the hungry. The Lord releases the imprisoned.

All the descendants of Israel will be vindicated by the Lord and will boast in him. ¹ 

Yet the Lord our God is compassionate and forgiving, ¹  even though we have rebelled against him.

“It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.’ ¹ 

A disciple ¹  is not greater than ²  his teacher, but everyone when fully trained will be like his teacher.

Therefore if the uncircumcised man obeys ¹  the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?

¹ who though he existed in the form of God ²  did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped,

But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker. ¹ 

Rather, he must acknowledge the son of the less loved ¹  wife as firstborn and give him the double portion ²  of all he has, for that son is the beginning of his father’s procreative power ³  – to him should go the right of the firstborn.

The sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn – (Now he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s bed, ¹  his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph, Israel’s son. So Reuben is not listed as firstborn in the genealogical records. ²
