The people will treat each other harshly; men will oppose each other; neighbors will fight. ¹  Youths will proudly defy the elderly and riffraff will challenge those who were once respected. ² 

The sons of Shemaiah: Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad. His relatives ¹  Elihu and Semakiah were also respected.

Jehoshaphat was very wealthy and greatly respected. He made an alliance by marriage with Ahab,

A good name ¹  is to be chosen ²  rather than great wealth, good favor ³  more than silver or gold.

captains of groups of fifty, the respected citizens, ¹  advisers and those skilled in magical arts, ²  and those who know incantations.

The leaders and the highly respected people ¹  are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.

Then some of the elders of Judah ¹  stepped forward and spoke to all the people gathered there. They said,

In this way you will live ¹  a decent life before outsiders and not be in need. ² 

Likewise also their wives ¹  must be dignified, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in every respect.

Now Naaman, the commander of the king of Syria’s army, was esteemed and respected by his master, ¹  for through him the Lord had given Syria military victories. But this great warrior had a skin disease. ² 

They said, “Cornelius the centurion, ¹  a righteous ²  and God-fearing man, well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, ³  was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear a message ⁴  from you.”

But Abel brought ¹  some of the firstborn of his flock – even the fattest ²  of them. And the Lord was pleased with ³  Abel and his offering,

From ¹  the three he was given honor and he became their officer, even though he was not one of the three.

Jabez was more respected than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, for she said, “I experienced pain when I gave birth to him.” ¹ 

His son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders of their families, for they were highly respected.

The Lord made his kingdom secure; ¹  all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he became very wealthy and greatly respected. ² 

We have behaved corruptly against you, not obeying the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments that you commanded your servant Moses.

So I concluded that wisdom is better than might, ¹  but a poor man’s wisdom is despised; no one ever listens ²  to his advice. ³ 

One dead fly ¹  makes the perfumer’s ointment give off a rancid stench, ²  so a little folly can outweigh ³  much wisdom. ⁴
