He must not profane his children among his people, ¹  for I am the Lord who sanctifies him.’”

Gideon fathered seventy sons through his many wives. ¹ 

He has neither children nor descendants ¹  among his people, no survivor in those places he once stayed. ² 

“You, my servant Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend, ¹ 

All the descendants of Israel will be vindicated by the Lord and will boast in him. ¹ 

O children ¹  of Israel, God’s ²  servant, you descendants of Jacob, God’s ³  chosen ones!

O children ¹  of Abraham, ²  God’s ³  servant, you descendants ⁴  of Jacob, God’s ⁵  chosen ones!

At whom are you laughing? At whom are you opening your mouth and sticking out your tongue? You are the children of rebels, the offspring of liars, ¹ 

They will not work in vain, or give birth to children that will experience disaster. ¹  For the Lord will bless their children and their descendants. ² 

And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted. ¹ 

Then Judah said to Onan, “Have sexual relations with ¹  your brother’s wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her so that you may raise ²  up a descendant for your brother.” ³ 

May your family ¹  become like the family of Perez ²  – whom Tamar bore to Judah – through the descendants ³  the Lord gives you by this young woman.”

Just as surely as I have done this, so surely will I never reject the descendants of Jacob. Nor will I ever refuse to choose one of my servant David’s descendants to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Indeed, ¹  I will restore them ²  and show mercy to them.”

“Every firstborn of the womb ¹  belongs to me, even every firstborn ²  of your cattle that is a male, ³  whether ox or sheep.

There were seven brothers. The first one married, ¹  and when he died he had no children.

The second married her and died without any children, and likewise the third.

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, ¹  heirs according to the promise.

Come, let’s make our father drunk with wine ¹  so we can have sexual relations ²  with him and preserve ³  our family line through our father.” ⁴ 

Jacob and all his descendants took their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and they went to Egypt. ¹ 

He brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons, ¹  his daughters and granddaughters – all his descendants.
