It is higher ¹  than the heavens – what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol ²  – what can you know?

Who can really fathom the intensity of your anger? ¹  Your raging fury causes people to fear you. ² 

You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; ¹  you are aware of everything I do. ² 

How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God! ¹  How vast is their sum total! ² 

Our Lord is great and has awesome power; ¹  there is no limit to his wisdom. ² 

I have examined all this by wisdom; I said, “I am determined ¹  to comprehend this” ²  – but it was beyond my grasp. ³ 

You see ¹  many things, but don’t comprehend; ²  their ears are open, but do not hear.”

So ¹  with many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear.

that ¹  by revelation the divine secret ²  was made known to me, as I wrote before briefly. ³ 

then I discerned all that God has done: ¹  No one really comprehends what happens ²  on earth. ³  Despite all human ⁴  efforts to discover it, no one can ever grasp ⁵  it. ⁶  Even if ⁷  a wise person claimed ⁸  that he understood, he would not really comprehend ⁹  it.

The Lord’s messenger said to him, “You should not ask me my name, because you cannot comprehend it.” ¹ 

He said, “Go and tell these people: ‘Listen continually, but don’t understand! Look continually, but don’t perceive!’

It is of no value ¹  for the soil or for the manure pile; it is to be thrown out. ²  The one who has ears to hear had better listen!” ³ 

You people ¹  worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. ² 

But these men do not understand the things they slander, and they are being destroyed by the very things that, like irrational animals, they instinctively comprehend. ¹ 

I tried ¹  to understand, examine, and comprehend ²  the role of ³  wisdom in the scheme of things, ⁴  and to understand the stupidity of wickedness ⁵  and the insanity of folly. ⁶ 

Whenever it sweeps by, it will overtake you; indeed, ¹  every morning it will sweep by, it will come through during the day and the night.” ²  When this announcement is understood, it will cause nothing but terror.

And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: ‘You will listen carefully ¹  yet will never understand, you will look closely ²  yet will never comprehend.

When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one ¹  comes and snatches what was sown in his heart; ²  this is the seed sown along the path.

so that although they look they may look but not see, and although they hear they may hear but not understand, so they may not repent and be forgiven.” ¹
