Now Jericho ¹  was shut tightly ²  because of the Israelites. No one was allowed to leave or enter. ³ 

He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; ¹  he gave the symbol of his splendor ²  into the hand of the enemy. ³ 

Those nations that you are about to dispossess listen to omen readers and diviners, but the Lord your God has not given you permission to do such things.

(Now the priests of the high places did not go up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but they did eat unleavened cakes among their fellow priests.) ¹ 

But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief ¹  was coming, he would have been alert and would not have let his house be broken into.

but your father has humiliated ¹  me and changed my wages ten times. But God has not permitted him to do me any harm.

Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected ¹  to see you ²  again, but now God has allowed me to see your children ³  too.”

Moses alone may come ¹  near the Lord, but the others ²  must not come near, ³  nor may the people go up with him.”

This is why ¹  the Lord permitted these nations to remain and did not conquer them immediately; ²  he did not hand them over to Joshua.

Though you have allowed me to experience much trouble and distress, ¹  revive me once again! ²  Bring me up once again ³  from the depths of the earth!

As for the rest of the beasts, their ruling authority had already been removed, though they were permitted to go on living ¹  for a time and a season.

Jesus ¹  said to them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hard hearts, ²  but from the beginning it was not this way.

Am I not ¹  permitted to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ ² 

“All things are lawful for me” ¹  – but not everything is beneficial. “All things are lawful for me” – but I will not be controlled by anything.

“Everything is lawful,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is lawful,” ¹  but not everything builds others up. ² 

Then ¹  the fourth angel ²  poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was permitted to scorch people ³  with fire.

The king thereby allowed the Jews who were in every city to assemble and to stand up for themselves – to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any army of whatever people or province that should become their adversaries, including their women and children, ¹  and to confiscate their property.

They press out the olive oil between the rows of olive trees; ¹  they tread the winepresses while they are thirsty. ² 

God ¹  may let them rest in a feeling of security, ²  but he is constantly watching ³  all their ways. ⁴ 

He preserves our lives ¹  and does not allow our feet to slip.
