This is what the Lord says: “Just as a shepherd salvages from the lion’s mouth a couple of leg bones or a piece of an ear, so the Israelites who live in Samaria will be salvaged. ¹  They will be left with just a corner of a bed, ²  and a part ³  of a couch.”

When ¹  the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, ²  and the fields yield no crops; ³  when the sheep disappear ⁴  from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls,

But Abel brought ¹  some of the firstborn of his flock – even the fattest ²  of them. And the Lord was pleased with ³  Abel and his offering,

The Lord ¹  said to him, “Take for me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”

He replied, “You must take these seven ewe lambs from my hand as legal proof ¹  that I dug this well.” ² 

“God will provide ¹  for himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham replied. The two of them continued on together.

“You know how I have worked for you,” Jacob replied, ¹  “and how well your livestock have fared under my care. ² 

But if the animals were weaker, he did not set the branches there. ¹  So the weaker animals ended up belonging to Laban ²  and the stronger animals to Jacob.

In this way Jacob ¹  became extremely prosperous. He owned ²  large flocks, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys.

Jacob was very afraid and upset. So he divided the people who were with him into two camps, as well as the flocks, herds, and camels.

The men are shepherds; ¹  they take care of livestock. ²  They have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.’

Pharaoh said to Joseph’s ¹  brothers, “What is your occupation?” They said to Pharaoh, “Your servants take care of flocks, just as our ancestors did.” ² 

Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and began to draw ¹  water ²  and fill ³  the troughs in order to water their father’s flock.

You are to put them in one basket and present ¹  them in the basket, along with ²  the bull and the two rams.

“You are to take one ram, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on the ram’s head,

Then you are to cut the ram into pieces and wash the entrails and its legs and put them on its pieces and on its head

“You are to take the second ram, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on the ram’s head,

“‘If his offering for a peace offering sacrifice to the Lord is from the flock, he must present a flawless male or female. ¹ 

Then he must bring his guilt offering to the Lord, a flawless ram from the flock, convertible into silver shekels, ¹  for a guilt offering to the priest.

Then he presented the burnt offering ram and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram,
