Indeed, they made their heart as hard as diamond, ¹  so that they could not obey the Torah and the other words the Lord who rules over all had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore, the Lord who rules over all had poured out great wrath.

bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat ¹  you.

For the heart of this people has become dull, ¹  and their ears are hard of hearing, ²  and they have closed their eyes, so that they would not see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, ³  and I would heal them.”’ ⁴ 

but Israel even though pursuing ¹  a law of righteousness ²  did not attain it. ³ 

Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer.

we are persecuted, but not abandoned; ¹  we are knocked down, ²  but not destroyed,

Whatever you are doing, ¹  work at it with enthusiasm, ²  as to the Lord and not for people, ³

But Hannah replied, “That’s not the way it is, ¹  my lord! I am under a great deal of stress. ²  I have drunk neither wine nor beer. Rather, I have poured out my soul to ³  the Lord.

The Lord attacked ¹  the residents of Ashdod severely, bringing devastation on them. He struck the people of ²  both Ashdod and the surrounding area with sores. ³
