So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that looks toward the wilderness. ¹ 

and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the country of Moab, near the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the wilderness. ¹ 

This whole area ¹  will become a desolate wasteland. These nations will be subject to the king of Babylon for seventy years.’ ² 

to satisfy a devastated and desolate land, and to cause it to sprout with vegetation? ¹ 

The Lord ¹  found him ²  in a desolate land, in an empty wasteland where animals howl. ³  He continually guarded him ⁴  and taught him; ⁵  he continually protected him ⁶  like the pupil ⁷  of his eye.

Like ¹  wild donkeys in the desert they ²  go out to their labor, ³  seeking diligently for food; the wasteland provides ⁴  food for them and for their children.

Caravans ¹  turn aside from their routes; they go ²  into the wasteland ³  and perish. ⁴ 

gaunt ¹  with want and hunger, they would gnaw ²  the parched land, in former time desolate and waste. ³ 

to whom I appointed the steppe for its home, the salt wastes as its dwelling place?

He would pour ¹  contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road.

and rejected Esau. ¹  I turned Esau’s ²  mountains into a deserted wasteland ³  and gave his territory ⁴  to the wild jackals.”

They will lay it waste. It will lie parched ¹  and empty before me. The whole land will be laid waste. But no one living in it will pay any heed. ² 

They executed his miraculous signs among them, ¹  and his amazing deeds in the land of Ham.

In the wilderness they had an insatiable craving ¹  for meat; ²  they challenged God ³  in the desert.

They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live.

He turned ¹  streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land,

and a fruitful land into a barren place, ¹  because of the sin of its inhabitants.

As for his people, ¹  he turned ²  a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water.

How can we sing a song to the Lord in a foreign land?

Their peaceful dwelling places will be laid waste ¹  by the fierce anger of the Lord. ²
