Their wine is snakes’ poison, the deadly venom of cobras.

Their venom is like that of a snake, ¹  like a deaf serpent ²  that does not hear, ³ 

his food is turned sour ¹  in his stomach; ²  it becomes the venom of serpents ³  within him.

Their tongues wound like a serpent; ¹  a viper’s ²  venom is behind ³  their lips. (Selah)

They will be starved by famine, eaten by plague, and bitterly stung; ¹  I will send the teeth of wild animals against them, along with the poison of creatures that crawl in the dust.

“Their throats are open graves, ¹  they deceive with their tongues, the poison of asps is under their lips.” ² 

and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents ¹  and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow ²  from a flint rock and

So the Lord sent poisonous ¹  snakes ²  among the people, and they bit the people; many people of Israel died.

For their vine is from the stock ¹  of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah. ²  Their grapes contain venom, their clusters of grapes are bitter.

His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words; ¹  his tongue injures and destroys. ² 

They ¹  sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, ² 

He sent swarms of biting insects against them, ¹  as well as frogs that overran their land. ² 

Then ¹  out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and they were given power ²  like that of the scorpions of the earth.

The Lord says, ¹  “Yes indeed, ²  I am sending an enemy against you that will be like poisonous snakes which cannot be charmed away. ³  And they will inflict fatal wounds on you.” ⁴ 

“You who force your neighbor to drink wine ¹  are as good as dead ²  – you who make others intoxicated by forcing them to drink from the bowl of your furious anger, ³  so you can look at their genitals. ⁴ 

When Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood ¹  and was putting it on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.

They are filled ¹  with every kind of unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice. They are rife with ²  envy, murder, strife, deceit, hostility. They are gossips,

Don’t be so happy, all you Philistines, just because the club that beat you has been broken! ¹  For a viper will grow out of the serpent’s root, and its fruit will be a darting adder. ² 

When the local people ¹  saw the creature hanging from Paul’s ²  hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer! Although he has escaped from the sea, Justice herself ³  has not allowed him to live!” ⁴
