Therefore do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, ¹  if the world hates you. ² 

Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must all ¹  be born from above.’ ² 

But you, brothers and sisters, ¹  are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would.

Joshua attacked them by surprise after marching all night from Gilgal. ¹ 

“Do not be amazed at this, because a time ¹  is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice

Therefore it is not surprising his servants also disguise themselves ¹  as servants of righteousness, whose end will correspond to their actions. ² 

Dear friends, do not be astonished ¹  that a trial by fire is occurring among you, ²  as though something strange were happening to you.

He ¹  asked for a writing tablet ²  and wrote, ³  “His name is John.” And they were all amazed. ⁴ 

The ¹  Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus ²  did not first wash his hands ³  before the meal.

Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He ¹  called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.

So ¹  they are astonished ²  when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. ³ 

Joshua and his whole army caught them by surprise at the Waters of Merom and attacked them. ¹ 

In the middle of the night he was startled ¹  and turned over. ²  Now ³  he saw a woman ⁴  lying beside him! ⁵ 

So they started toward ¹  the Syrian camp at dusk. When they reached the edge of the Syrian camp, there was no one there.

But he did not answer even one accusation, so that the governor was quite amazed.

They ¹  were amazed ²  at his teaching, because he spoke ³  with authority. ⁴ 

Let destruction take them by surprise! ¹  Let the net they hid catch them! Let them fall into destruction! ² 

“See how Babylon ¹  has been captured! See how the pride of the whole earth has been taken! See what an object of horror Babylon has become among the nations! ² 

If you see the extortion ¹  of the poor, or the perversion ²  of justice and fairness in the government, ³  do not be astonished by the matter. For the high official is watched by a higher official, ⁴  and there are higher ones over them! ⁵ 

Now at that very moment his disciples came back. ¹  They were shocked ²  because he was speaking ³  with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you want?” ⁴  or “Why are you speaking with her?”
