The nations fell ¹  into the pit they had made; their feet were caught in the net they had hidden. ² 

On what ¹  were its bases ²  set, or who laid its cornerstone –

For your arrows pierce ¹  me, and your hand presses me down. ² 

ט (Tet) Her city gates have fallen ¹  to the ground; he smashed to bits ²  the bars that lock her gates. ³  Her king and princes were taken into exile; ⁴  there is no more guidance available. ⁵  As for her prophets, they no longer receive ⁶  a vision from the Lord.

Now you are wrecked by the seas, in the depths of the waters; your merchandise and all your company have sunk ¹  along with you. ² 

All the women who are left in the royal palace of Judah will be led out to the officers of the king of Babylon. They will taunt you saying, ¹  ‘Your trusted friends misled you; they have gotten the best of you. Now that your feet are stuck in the mud, they have turned their backs on you.’ ² 

They have sunk deep into corruption ¹  as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their wrongdoing. He will repay them for their sins.

The chariots of Pharaoh ¹  and his army he has thrown into the sea, and his chosen ²  officers were drowned ³  in the Red Sea.

For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. ¹ 

You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, ¹  in the dark places, in the watery depths.

When the people cried to Moses, he ¹  prayed to the Lord, and the fire died out. ² 

My offenses would be sealed up ¹  in a bag; ²  you would cover over ³  my sin.

The bravehearted ¹  were plundered; ²  they “fell asleep.” ³  All the warriors were helpless. ⁴ 

May the Lord be constantly aware of them, ¹  and cut off the memory of his children ²  from the earth!

But they do not realize ¹  that the dead ²  are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave. ³ 

Those who revolt are knee-deep in slaughter, ¹  but I will discipline them all. ² 

The businessmen love to cheat; ¹  they use dishonest scales. ²

Then ¹  one powerful angel picked up a stone like a huge millstone, threw it into the sea, and said, “With this kind of sudden violent force ²  Babylon the great city will be thrown down ³  and it will never be found again!

They will sing this lament over you: ¹  “‘How you have perished – you have vanished ²  from the seas, O renowned city, once mighty in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who spread their terror! ³
