People ¹  do not despise a thief when he steals to fulfill his need ²  when he is hungry.

The Lord satisfies ¹  the appetite ²  of the righteous, but he thwarts ³  the craving ⁴  of the wicked.

They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion. ¹ 

So Esau said to Jacob, “Feed ¹  me some of the red stuff – yes, this red stuff – because I’m starving!” (That is why he was also called ²  Edom.) ³ 

The king got up in the night and said to his advisers, ¹  “I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know we are starving, so they left the camp and hid in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and enter the city.’”

The mighty lion ¹  perishes ²  for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness ³  are scattered.

In time of famine ¹  he will redeem you from death, and in time of war from the power of the sword. ² 

Calamity is ¹  hungry for him, ²  and misfortune is ready at his side. ³ 

For he has satisfied those who thirst, ¹  and those who hunger he has filled with food. ² 

I desperately long to know ¹  your regulations at all times.

The fool folds his hands and does no work, ¹  so he has nothing to eat but his own flesh. ² 

If a brother or sister ¹  is poorly clothed and lacks daily food,

He then said, “Look, I hear that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us ¹  so that we may live ²  and not die.” ³ 

Therefore my ¹  people will be deported ²  because of their lack of understanding. Their ³  leaders will have nothing to eat, ⁴  their ⁵  masses will have nothing to drink. ⁶ 

But when he came to his senses ¹  he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have food ²  enough to spare, but here I am dying from hunger!

The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died ¹  by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by ²  the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full, ³  for you have brought us out into this desert to kill ⁴  this whole assembly with hunger!”

Now Jacob cooked some stew, ¹  and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished.

“Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die! What use is the birthright to me?” ¹ 

They go about naked, without clothing, and go hungry while they carry the sheaves. ¹ 

If his children increase – it is for the sword! ¹  His offspring never have enough to eat. ²
