Then say, ‘In the same way Babylon will sink and never rise again because of the judgments ¹  I am ready to bring upon her; they will grow faint.’” The prophecies of Jeremiah end here. ² 

But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, ¹  “Lord, save me!”

“Take these words to heart, ¹  for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.” ² 

Rescue me from the mud! Don’t let me sink! Deliver me ¹  from those who hate me, from the deep water!

For her house ¹  sinks ²  down to death, and her paths lead ³  to the place of the departed spirits. ⁴ 

So ¹  they motioned ²  to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they were about to sink. ³ 

I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; ¹  I am in ²  deep water, and the current overpowers me.

Because of this the earth ¹  will quake, ²  and all who live in it will mourn. The whole earth ³  will rise like the River Nile, ⁴  it will surge upward ⁵  and then grow calm, ⁶  like the Nile in Egypt. ⁷ 

Because of laziness the roof ¹  caves in, and because of idle hands ²  the house leaks.

Your wealth, products, and merchandise, your sailors and captains, your ship’s carpenters, ¹  your merchants, and all your fighting men within you, along with all your crew who are in you, will fall into the heart of the seas on the day of your downfall.

The sovereign Lord who commands armies will do this. ¹  He touches the earth and it dissolves; ²  all who live on it mourn. The whole earth ³  rises like the River Nile, ⁴  and then grows calm ⁵  like the Nile in Egypt. ⁶ 

A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, ¹  was sinking ²  into a deep sleep while Paul continued to speak ³  for a long time. Fast asleep, ⁴  he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.

You give me strength for battle; ¹  you make my foes kneel before me. ² 

His victims are crushed and beaten down; they are trapped in his sturdy nets. ¹ 

Far from where people live ¹  he sinks a shaft, in places travelers have long forgotten, ²  far from other people he dangles and sways. ³ 

On what ¹  were its bases ²  set, or who laid its cornerstone –

For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. ¹ 

Therefore, as flaming fire ¹  devours straw, and dry grass disintegrates in the flames, so their root will rot, and their flower will blow away like dust. ²  For they have rejected the law of the Lord who commands armies, they have spurned the commands ³  of the Holy One of Israel. ⁴ 

I ¹  continually think about ²  this, and I ³  am depressed. ⁴
