Ephraim has been like a dove, easily deceived and lacking discernment. They called to Egypt for help; they turned to Assyria for protection.

But reject those myths ¹  fit only for the godless and gullible, ²  and train yourself for godliness.

For ¹  wrath kills the foolish person, ²  and anger ³  slays the silly one.

Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting – all of which are out of character – but rather thanksgiving.

For some of these insinuate themselves ¹  into households and captivate weak women ²  who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions.

I hate those who serve worthless idols, ¹  but I trust in the Lord.

I said of partying, ¹  “It is folly,” and of self-indulgent pleasure, ²  “It accomplishes nothing!” ³ 

Five ¹  of the virgins ²  were foolish, and five were wise.

When ¹  the foolish ones took their lamps, they did not take extra ²  olive oil ³  with them.

Terrify them, Lord! ¹  Let the nations know they are mere mortals! ²  (Selah)

Their prosperity causes them to do wrong; ¹  their thoughts are sinful. ² 

The shrewd person ¹  conceals ²  knowledge, but foolish people ³  publicize folly. ⁴ 

Every shrewd ¹  person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays ²  his folly.

Like a dog that returns to its vomit, ¹  so a fool repeats his folly. ² 

Blind guides! You strain out a gnat yet swallow a camel! ¹ 

Later, ¹  the other virgins came too, saying, ‘Lord, lord! Let us in!’ ² 

For it seems unreasonable to me to send a prisoner without clearly indicating ¹  the charges against him.”

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

“You shall not take ¹  the name of the Lord your God in vain, ²  for the Lord will not hold guiltless ³  anyone who takes his name in vain.

You must not make use of the name of the Lord your God for worthless purposes, ¹  for the Lord will not exonerate anyone who abuses his name that way. ²
