Be amazed at this, O heavens! ¹  Be shocked and utterly dumbfounded,” says the Lord.

“Something horrible and shocking is going on in the land of Judah:

You will come to your grave in a full age, ¹  As stacks of grain are harvested in their season.

He lit the torches ¹  and set the jackals loose in the Philistines’ standing grain. He burned up the grain heaps and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.

I myself will make the land desolate and your enemies who live in it will be appalled.

So I responded to you, “Do not be terrified ¹  of them!

He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his weapons. ¹ 

So see here, I have stretched out my hand against you and cut off your rations. I have delivered you into the power of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed by your obscene conduct.

For, when I think ¹  about this, I am terrified ²  and my body feels a shudder. ³ 

Therefore I will again do an amazing thing for these people – an absolutely extraordinary deed. ¹  Wise men will have nothing to say, the sages will have no explanations.” ² 

“Look at the nations and pay attention! ¹  You will be shocked and amazed! ²  For I will do something in your lifetime ³  that you will not believe even though you are forewarned. ⁴ 

Then ¹  there were flashes of lightning, roaring, ²  and crashes of thunder, and there was a tremendous earthquake – an earthquake unequaled since humanity ³  has been on the earth, so tremendous was that earthquake.

But I see the prophets of Jerusalem ¹  doing something just as shocking. They are unfaithful to me and continually prophesy lies. ²  So they give encouragement to people who are doing evil, with the result that they do not stop their evildoing. ³  I consider all of them as bad as the people of Sodom, and the citizens of Jerusalem as bad as the people of Gomorrah. ⁴ 

The man asked him, ¹  “What is your name?” ²  He answered, “Jacob.”

The earth heaved and shook; ¹  the foundations of the sky ²  trembled. ³  They heaved because he was angry.

After the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a soft whisper. ¹ 

People of the west ¹  are appalled at his fate; ²  people of the east are seized with horror, ³  saying, ⁴ 

Look ¹  at me and be appalled; put your hands over your mouths. ² 

They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash ¹  they come rolling in. ² 

The earth heaved and shook; ¹  the roots of the mountains ²  trembled; ³  they heaved because he was angry.
