to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; ¹  to perseverance, godliness;

gentleness, and ¹  self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, ¹ 

For God did not give us a Spirit ¹  of fear but of power and love and self-control.

You know ¹  that such a person is twisted by sin ²  and is conscious of it himself. ³ 

but ¹  wrath and anger to those who live in selfish ambition ²  and do not obey the truth but follow ³  unrighteousness.

unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good,

Even though they have the appearance of wisdom ¹  with their self-imposed worship and false humility ²  achieved by an ³  unsparing treatment of the body – a wisdom with no true value – they in reality result in fleshly indulgence. ⁴ 

“Woe to you, experts in the law ¹  and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

I, Paul, have written ¹  this letter ²  with my own hand: ³  I will repay it. I could also mention that you owe ⁴  me your very self.

Like a city that is broken down and without a wall, so is a person who cannot control his temper. ¹

Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, ¹  sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. ²

Instead he must be hospitable, devoted to what is good, sensible, upright, devout, and self-controlled.

But the one who lives for pleasure is dead even ¹  while she lives.

For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer. ¹ 

While Paul ¹  was discussing ²  righteousness, self-control, ³  and the coming judgment, Felix ⁴  became ⁵  frightened and said, “Go away for now, and when I have an opportunity, ⁶  I will send for you.”

For I delight in the law of God in my inner being.
