Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes less one. ¹ 

burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. ¹ 

The judge ¹  may sentence him to forty blows, ²  but no more. If he is struck with more than these, you might view your fellow Israelite ³  with contempt.

A rebuke makes a greater impression on ¹  a discerning person than a hundred blows on a fool. ² 

Then, ¹  if the guilty person is sentenced to a beating, ²  the judge shall force him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of blows his wicked behavior deserves. ³ 

You will be protected ¹  from malicious gossip, ²  and will not be afraid of the destruction ³  when it comes.

When they had stretched him out for the lash, ¹  Paul said to the centurion ²  standing nearby, “Is it legal for you to lash a man who is a Roman citizen ³  without a proper trial?” ⁴ 

That ¹  servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or do what his master asked ²  will receive a severe beating.

Why ¹  has your heart carried you away, ²  and why do your eyes flash, ³ 

Tremble with fear and do not sin! ¹  Meditate as you lie in bed, and repent of your ways! ²  (Selah)

The Lord who commands armies is about to beat them ¹  with a whip, similar to the way he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb. ²  He will use his staff against the sea, lifting it up as he did in Egypt. ³ 

But the one who did not know his master’s will ¹  and did things worthy of punishment ²  will receive a light beating. ³  From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, ⁴  and from the one who has been entrusted with much, ⁵  even more will be asked. ⁶ 

So he made a whip of cords ¹  and drove them all out of the temple courts, ²  with the sheep and the oxen. He scattered the coins of the money changers ³  and overturned their tables.
