Her rival wife used to upset her and make her worry, ¹  for the Lord had not enabled her to have children.

Let us not become conceited, ¹  provoking ²  one another, being jealous ³  of one another.

It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful.

They caused confusion among ¹  the crowd and the city officials ²  who heard these things.

Job ¹  has not directed ²  his words to me, and so I will not reply to him with your arguments. ³ 

A gift given ¹  in secret subdues ²  anger, and a bribe given secretly ³  subdues ⁴  strong wrath. ⁵ 

Am I saying these things only on the basis of common sense, ¹  or does the law not say this as well?

Fathers, ¹  do not provoke ²  your children, so they will not become disheartened.

But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, then those whom you allow to remain will be irritants in your eyes and thorns in your side, and will cause you trouble in the land where you will be living.

Then Abraham ¹  said, “May the Lord not be angry ²  so that I may speak! ³  What if thirty are found there?” He replied, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the road to the Red Sea, ¹  to go around the land of Edom, but the people ²  became impatient along the way.

Fathers, ¹  do not provoke your children to anger, ²  but raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

But now, put off all such things ¹  as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth.

As it says, ¹  “Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! ²  Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” ³ 

And against whom was God ¹  provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? ² 

if it is exhortation, he must exhort; if it is contributing, he must do so with sincerity; if it is leadership, he must do so with diligence; if it is showing mercy, he must do so with cheerfulness.
