“It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.’ ¹ 

“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries ¹  someone else commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

“But every vow of a widow or of a divorced woman which she has pledged for herself will remain intact. ¹ 

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” ¹ 

But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” ¹ 

They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?” ¹ 

Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another commits adultery.”

They must not take a wife defiled by prostitution, ¹  nor are they to take a wife divorced from her husband, ²  for the priest ³  is holy to his God. ⁴ 

He must not marry ¹  a widow, a divorced woman, or one profaned by prostitution; he may only take a virgin from his people ²  as a wife.

Then some Pharisees ¹  came to him in order to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful ²  to divorce a wife for any cause?” ³ 

Jesus ¹  said to them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hard hearts, ²  but from the beginning it was not this way.

Then some Pharisees ¹  came, and to test him ²  they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his ³  wife?” ⁴ 

So ¹  he told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.

(but if she does, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband), and a husband should not divorce his wife.

If the second husband rejects ¹  her and then divorces her, ²  gives her the papers, and evicts her from his house, or if the second husband who married her dies,

They must not marry a widow or a divorcee, but they may marry a virgin from the house of Israel ¹  or a widow who is a priest’s widow.

To the rest I say – I, not the Lord ¹  – if a brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is happy to live with him, he should not divorce her.

The man who has raped her must pay her father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has violated her; he may never divorce her as long as he lives.
