when he responds to the prayer of the destitute, ¹  and does not reject ²  their request. ³ 

Defend the cause of the poor and the fatherless! ¹  Vindicate the oppressed and suffering!

They were stoned, sawed apart, ¹  murdered with the sword; they went about in sheepskins and goatskins; they were destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

When I turn the land of Egypt into desolation and the land is destitute of everything that fills it, when I strike all those who live in it, then they will know that I am the Lord.’

Folly is a joy to one who lacks sense, ¹  but one who has understanding ²  follows an upright course. ³ 

Open your mouth ¹  on behalf of those unable to speak, ²  for the legal rights of all the dying. ³ 

If a brother or sister ¹  is poorly clothed and lacks daily food,

Now the famine was severe in the land. ¹ 

Honor ¹  widows who are truly in need. ² 

Surely I am looking to you, ¹  O sovereign Lord. In you I take shelter. Do not expose me to danger! ² 

If the person is poor you may not use what he gives you as security for a covering. ¹ 

Consequently ¹  the Lord provides safety for the oppressed; ²  he provides safety in times of trouble. ³ 

Open your mouth, judge in righteousness, ¹  and plead the cause ²  of the poor and needy.

They will hear, ‘Run! Save yourselves! Even if you must be like a lonely shrub in the desert!’ ¹ 

Look, your house is left to you desolate!

For he has oppressed the poor and abandoned them; ¹  he has seized a house which he did not build. ² 

and constant bickering by people corrupted in their minds and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness ¹  is a way of making a profit.

For he will rescue the needy ¹  when they cry out for help, and the oppressed ²  who have no defender.

The one who denounces ¹  his neighbor lacks wisdom, ²  but the one who has discernment ³  keeps silent. ⁴ 

A generous woman ¹  gains honor, and ruthless men ²  seize wealth. ³
