When King Toi ¹  of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,

he ¹  sent his son Joram ²  to King David to extend his best wishes ³  and to pronounce a blessing on him for his victory over Hadadezer, for Toi had been at war with Hadadezer. ⁴  He brought with him various items made of silver, gold, and bronze. ⁵ 

They repay me evil for the good I have done; ¹  I am overwhelmed with sorrow. ² 

If, however, the person who made the vow redeems the animal, ¹  he must add one fifth to ²  its conversion value.

And when it came to rest he would say, “Return, O Lord, to the many thousands of Israel!” ¹

Please remember me for good, O my God, for all that I have done for this people.

I know that you are bringing ¹  me to death, to the meeting place for all the living.

The king sent the following response: “To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and other parts of Trans-Euphrates: Greetings! ¹ 

“In what direction ¹  does light reside, and darkness, where is its place,

Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will bring me to Edom? ¹ 

Raise me to a position of great honor! ¹  Turn and comfort me! ² 

and to put on sandals but not to wear two tunics. ¹ 

If the one who consecrates it redeems his house, he must add to it one fifth of its conversion value in silver, and it will belong to him. ¹ 

You and Aaron are to number ¹  all in Israel who can serve in the army, ²  those who are ³  twenty years old or older, ⁴  by their divisions. ⁵

From the sons of Joseph: From the descendants of Ephraim: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name.
