But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,

At that time Herod the tetrarch ¹  heard reports about Jesus,

When ¹  he learned that he was from Herod’s jurisdiction, ²  he sent him over to Herod, ³  who also happened to be in Jerusalem ⁴  at that time.

When King Herod ¹  heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.

But when John rebuked Herod ¹  the tetrarch ²  because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, ³  and because of all the evil deeds ⁴  that he had done,

and Joanna the wife of Cuza ¹  (Herod’s ²  household manager), ³  Susanna, and many others who provided for them ⁴  out of their own resources.

he said, “I will give you a hearing ¹  when your accusers arrive too.” Then ²  he ordered that Paul ³  be kept under guard in Herod’s palace. ⁴ 

After Herod ¹  had died, an ²  angel of the Lord ³  appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt

For John had repeatedly told ¹  Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ² 

And Jesus ¹  ordered them, ²  “Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees ³  and the yeast of Herod!”

That very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other, ¹  for prior to this they had been enemies. ² 

About that time King Herod ¹  laid hands on ²  some from the church to harm them. ³ 

For Herod had arrested John, bound him, ¹  and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,

When Herod ¹  had searched ²  for him and did not find him, he questioned ³  the guards and commanded that they be led away to execution. ⁴  Then ⁵  Herod ⁶  went down from Judea to Caesarea ⁷  and stayed there.

He stayed there until Herod ¹  died. In this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled: “I called my Son out of Egypt.” ² 

But ¹  a suitable day ²  came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee.

Herod said, “I had John ¹  beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” So Herod wanted to learn about Jesus. ² 

At that time, ¹  some Pharisees ²  came up and said to Jesus, ³  “Get away from here, ⁴  because Herod ⁵  wants to kill you.”

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, ¹  dressing him in elegant clothes, ²  Herod ³  sent him back to Pilate.

On a day determined in advance, Herod ¹  put on his royal robes, ²  sat down on the judgment seat, ³  and made a speech ⁴  to them.
