Then Moses selected three cities in the Transjordan, toward the east.

He hung the king of Ai on a tree, leaving him exposed until evening. ¹  At sunset Joshua ordered that his corpse be taken down from the tree. ²  They threw it down at the entrance of the city gate and erected over it a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day). ³ 

Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle by the pass ¹  of Heres.

For they will quickly dry up like grass, and wither away like plants. ¹ 

They return in the evening; they growl ¹  like a dog and prowl around outside ²  the city.

in the morning it glistens ¹  and sprouts up; at evening time it withers ²  and dries up.

Awake, O stringed instrument and harp! I will wake up at dawn! ¹ 

For everything ¹  there is an appointed time, ²  and an appropriate time ³  for every activity ⁴  on earth: ⁵ 

By day it will be a shelter to provide shade from the heat, as well as safety and protection from the heavy downpour. ¹ 

The water of the sea will be dried up, and the river will dry up and be empty. ¹ 

In all your dwellings, the cities will be laid waste and the high places ruined so that your altars will be laid waste and ruined, your idols will be shattered and demolished, your incense altars will be broken down, and your works wiped out. ¹ 

The sluice gates ¹  are opened; the royal palace is deluged ²  and dissolves. ³ 

“Now those who will be camping ¹  on the east, toward the sunrise, ²  are the divisions ³  of the camp of Judah under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is ⁴  Nahshon son of Amminadab.

Now these are the kings of the land whom the Israelites defeated and drove from their land ¹  on the east side of the Jordan, ²  from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon, including all the eastern Arabah:

He removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah. The kingdom had rest under his rule. ¹ 

he tore down the altars and Asherah poles, demolished the idols, and smashed all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

Like a bridegroom it emerges ¹  from its chamber; ²  like a strong man it enjoys ³  running its course. ⁴ 

For this is what the Lord has told me: “I will wait ¹  and watch from my place, like scorching heat produced by the sunlight, ²  like a cloud of mist ³  in the heat ⁴  of harvest.” ⁵ 

When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. ¹  The great deep ²  shouts out; it lifts its hands high. ³ 

He ordered the altars of the Baals to be torn down, ¹  and broke the incense altars that were above them. He smashed the Asherah poles, idols and images, crushed them up and sprinkled the dust over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them.
