(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) ¹ 

After this many of his disciples quit following him ¹  and did not accompany him ²  any longer.

Then some of the residents of Jerusalem ¹  began to say, “Isn’t this the man ²  they are trying ³  to kill?

The man ¹  replied, ²  “And who is he, sir, that ³  I may believe in him?”

(This happened ¹  to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated ²  what kind of death he was going to die. ³ )

All ¹  who were sitting in the council ²  looked intently at Stephen ³  and saw his face was like the face of an angel. ⁴ 

When they heard these things, they became furious ¹  and ground their teeth ²  at him.

For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited ¹  to him as righteousness.” ² 

Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word ¹  of Christ. ² 

For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Instead, keeping God’s commandments is what counts.

Am I saying these things only on the basis of common sense, ¹  or does the law not say this as well?

In any case, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.

I am not saying this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love by comparison with the eagerness of others. ¹ 

As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine ¹  will not be stopped ²  in the regions of Achaia.

In my zeal for God I persecuted the church. According to the righteousness stipulated in the law I was blameless.

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in any circumstance.

God ¹  said, “Take your son – your only son, whom you love, Isaac ²  – and go to the land of Moriah! ³  Offer him up there as a burnt offering ⁴  on one of the mountains which I will indicate to ⁵  you.”

The shaft ¹  of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and the iron point of his spear weighed six hundred shekels. ²  His shield bearer was walking before him.

“The Sea” stood on top of twelve bulls. Three faced northward, three westward, three southward, and three eastward. “The Sea” was placed on top of them, and they all faced outward. ¹
