Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests ¹  cannot mourn while the bridegroom ²  is with them, can they? But the days ³  are coming when the bridegroom will be taken from them, ⁴  and then they will fast.

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ¹  we wailed in mourning, ²  yet you did not weep.’

Although it grieved the king, ¹  because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.

When ¹  his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were very upset and went and told their lord everything that had taken place.

Grieve, mourn, ¹  and weep. Turn your laughter ²  into mourning and your joy into despair.
