But the more the Egyptians ¹  oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread. ²  As a result the Egyptians loathed ³  the Israelites,

Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the road to the Red Sea, ¹  to go around the land of Edom, but the people ²  became impatient along the way.

Israel’s power continued to overwhelm ¹  King Jabin of Canaan until they did away with ²  him. ³ 

Tahpenes’ sister gave birth to his son, ¹  named Genubath. Tahpenes raised ²  him in Pharaoh’s palace; Genubath grew up in Pharaoh’s palace among Pharaoh’s sons.

But Rehoboam rejected their advice and consulted the young advisers who served him, with whom he had grown up. ¹

The man became wealthy. ¹  His influence continued to grow ²  until he became very prominent.

So he named it Shibah; ¹  that is why the name of the city has been Beer Sheba ²  to this day.

Judah acquired ¹  a wife for Er his firstborn; her name was Tamar.

Then ¹  seven heads of grain, thin and burned by the east wind, were sprouting up after them.

Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard, ¹  and he did not listen to them, just as the Lord had predicted.

When Saul saw how very successful he was, he was afraid of him.
