When the king spoke with them, he did not find among the entire group ¹  anyone like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, or Azariah. So they entered the king’s service. ² 

But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally ¹  two came forward

Hasn’t Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps ¹  the law! Why do you want ²  to kill me?”

But exhort one another each day, as long as it is called “Today,” that none of you may become hardened by sin’s deception.

“Listen, sir, ¹  you are a mighty prince ²  among us! You may bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb to prevent you ³  from burying your dead.”

Carefully read the scroll of the Lord! ¹  Not one of these creatures will be missing, ²  none will lack a mate. ³  For the Lord has issued the decree, ⁴  and his own spirit gathers them. ⁵ 

May their camp become desolate, their tents uninhabited! ¹ 

Do not envy a violent man, ¹  and do not choose to imitate ²  any of his ways;

Fire resides in his tent; ¹  over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.

for I rescued the poor who cried out for help, and the orphan who ¹  had no one to assist him;

They say, ¹  “God has abandoned him. Run and seize him, for there is no one who will rescue him!”

Now the soldiers’ plan was to kill the prisoners ¹  so that none of them would escape by swimming away. ² 

They must not leave any of it until morning, nor break any of its bones; they must observe it in accordance with every statute of the Passover.

There is no one like God, O Jeshurun, ¹  who rides through the sky ²  to help you, on the clouds in majesty.

Now Jericho ¹  was shut tightly ²  because of the Israelites. No one was allowed to leave or enter. ³ 

All Israel rose up in unison ¹  and said, “Not one of us will go home! ²  Not one of us will return ³  to his house!

So the Lord was furious ¹  with Israel and rejected them; ²  only the tribe of Judah was left.

Let its morning stars ¹  be darkened; let it wait ²  for daylight but find none, ³  nor let it see the first rays ⁴  of dawn,

Otherwise they will rip ¹  me ²  to shreds like a lion; they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me. ³ 

Carefully consider this, you who reject God! ¹  Otherwise I will rip you to shreds ²  and no one will be able to rescue you.
