When they are scorched, ¹  they dry up, when it is hot, they vanish ²  from their place.

in the morning it glistens ¹  and sprouts up; at evening time it withers ²  and dries up.

He turned ¹  streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land,

I dug wells and drank water. ¹  With the soles of my feet I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.’

I will make streams flow down the slopes and produce springs in the middle of the valleys. I will turn the desert into a pool of water and the arid land into springs.

For I will pour water on the parched ground ¹  and cause streams to flow ²  on the dry land. I will pour my spirit on your offspring and my blessing on your children.

A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness. ²  O God, you are my God! I long for you! ³  My soul thirsts ⁴  for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched ⁵  land where there is no water.

But it was plucked up in anger; it was thrown down to the ground. The east wind ¹  dried up its fruit; its strong branches broke off and withered – a fire consumed them.

But Babylonia will be put to great shame. The land where you were born ¹  will be disgraced. Indeed, ²  Babylonia will become the least important of all nations. It will become a dry and barren desert.

Give them, O Lord – what will you give them? Give them wombs that miscarry, and breasts that cannot nurse! ¹

The Lord ¹  will attack the north ²  and destroy Assyria. He will make Nineveh a heap of ruins; it will be as barren ³  as the desert.
