Let us not become conceited, ¹  provoking ²  one another, being jealous ³  of one another.

So then we must not sleep as the rest, but must stay alert and sober.

Likewise also their wives ¹  must be dignified, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in every respect.

O my soul, do not come into their council, do not be united to their assembly, my heart, ¹  for in their anger they have killed men, and for pleasure they have hamstrung oxen.

For whoever wants to save his life ¹  will lose it, ²  but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

For whoever wants to save his life ¹  will lose it, ²  but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, ¹  but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.

It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful.

For the overseer ¹  must be blameless as one entrusted with God’s work, ²  not arrogant, not prone to anger, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain.

In my self-confidence I said, “I will never be upended.” ¹ 

Evil people self-destruct; ¹  those who hate the godly are punished. ² 

in order to shoot down the innocent ¹  in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. ² 

This will bring ¹  healing to your body, ²  and refreshment ³  to your inner self. ⁴ 

The wise inherit honor, but he holds fools up ¹  to public contempt. ² 

When pride ¹  comes, ²  then comes disgrace, ³  but with humility ⁴  comes ⁵  wisdom.

The crown of the wise is their riches, ¹  but the folly ²  of fools is folly.

The lips of the wise spread ¹  knowledge, but not so the heart of fools. ² 

A fool takes no pleasure ¹  in understanding but only in disclosing ²  what is on his mind. ³ 

Judgments ¹  are prepared for scorners, and floggings for the backs of fools.
