You godly ones, rejoice in the Lord! Give thanks to his holy name. ¹ 

May his descendants ¹  be cut off! ²  May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! ³ 

He does ¹  amazing things that will be remembered; ²  the Lord is merciful and compassionate.

O Lord, your name endures, ¹  your reputation, O Lord, lasts. ² 

If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand be crippled! ¹ 

Now ¹  while some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned ²  with beautiful stones and offerings, ³  Jesus ⁴  said,

“Remember ¹  the Sabbath ²  day to set it apart as holy. ³ 

I responded to them by saying, “The God of heaven will prosper us. We his servants will start the rebuilding. ¹  But you have no just or ancient right in Jerusalem.” ² 

Evergreens will grow in place of thorn bushes, firs will grow in place of nettles; they will be a monument to the Lord, ¹  a permanent reminder that will remain. ² 

You will become fuel for the fire – your blood will stain the middle of the land; ¹  you will no longer be remembered, for I, the Lord, have spoken.’”

It was a memorial for the Israelites, that no outsider who is not a descendant of ¹  Aaron should approach to burn incense before the Lord, that he might not become like Korah and his company – just as the Lord had spoken by the authority ²  of Moses.

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a memorial pillar.

God also said to Moses, “You must say this to the Israelites, ‘The Lord ¹  – the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you. This is my name ²  forever, and this is my memorial from generation to generation.’ ³ 

“Also in the time when you rejoice, such as ¹  on your appointed festivals or ²  at the beginnings of your months, you must blow with your trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, so that they may ³  become ⁴  a memorial for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”

Prior to this ¹  Absalom had set up a monument ²  and dedicated it to himself in the King’s Valley, reasoning “I have no son who will carry on my name.” He named the monument after himself, and to this day it is known as Absalom’s Memorial.

whenever ¹  I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours.

They remembered that God was their protector, ¹  and that the sovereign God was their deliverer. ² 

They rejected ¹  the God who delivered them, the one who performed great deeds in Egypt,

This brought him a reward, an eternal gift. ¹ 

For he will never be upended; others will always remember one who is just. ¹
