Terrors ¹  frighten him on all sides and dog ²  his every step.

Your enemies, O Lord, hurl insults; they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. ¹ 

Then many will be led into sin, ¹  and they will betray one another and hate one another.

For though we live ¹  as human beings, ²  we do not wage war according to human standards, ³ 

unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good,

צ (Tsade) Our enemies ¹  hunted us down at every step ²  so that we could not walk about in our streets. Our end drew near, our days were numbered, ³  for our end had come!

The godly speak wise words and promote justice. ¹ 

In those days ¹  no one could travel safely, ²  for total chaos had overtaken all the people of the surrounding lands. ³ 

he lived in ruined towns ¹  and in houses where ²  no one lives, where they are ready to crumble into heaps. ³ 

Moreover, the strength of their ¹  hands – what use was it to me? Men whose strength ²  had perished;

Yet you have battered us, leaving us a heap of ruins overrun by wild dogs; ¹  you have covered us with darkness. ² 

but, despite their wealth, people do not last, ¹  they are like animals ²  that perish. ³ 

Wealthy people do not understand; ¹  they are like animals ²  that perish. ³ 

He allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured; ¹  he gave the symbol of his splendor ²  into the hand of the enemy. ³ 

(May those who hate the Lord ¹  cower in fear ²  before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) ³ 

He ordered flies to come; ¹  gnats invaded their whole territory.

For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me. ¹ 

The Lord deserves praise, ¹  for ²  he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth.

A king’s wrath is like ¹  the roar of a lion, ²  but his favor is like dew on the grass. ³ 

But if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured ¹  by the sword.” Know for certain that the Lord has spoken. ²
