Now if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons ¹  cast them ²  out? Therefore they will be your judges.

The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.” ¹ 

for the weapons of our warfare are not human weapons, ¹  but are made powerful by God ²  for tearing down strongholds. ³  We tear down arguments ⁴ 

and to have authority to cast out demons.

But when the Pharisees ¹  heard this they said, “He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebul, ²  the ruler ³  of demons!”

The experts in the law ¹  who came down from Jerusalem ²  said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” ³  and, “By the ruler ⁴  of demons he casts out demons.”

The waves ¹  of death engulfed me, the currents ²  of chaos ³  overwhelmed me. ⁴ 

Pay them back for their evil deeds! Pay them back for what they do! Punish them! ¹ 

So ¹  he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. ²  But ³  he would not permit the demons to speak, ⁴  because they knew him. ⁵ 

So ¹  he called them and spoke to them in parables: ²  “How can Satan cast out Satan?

Now ¹  he was casting out a demon that was mute. ²  When ³  the demon had gone out, the man who had been mute began to speak, ⁴  and the crowds were amazed.

So ¹  if ²  Satan too is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? I ask you this because ³  you claim that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

The Judeans ¹  replied, ²  “Aren’t we correct in saying ³  that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?” ⁴ 

Others said, “These are not the words ¹  of someone possessed by a demon. A demon cannot cause the blind to see, ²  can it?” ³ 

No, I mean that what the pagans sacrifice ¹  is to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons.

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot take part in the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

The waves of death engulfed me; the currents ¹  of chaos ²  overwhelmed me. ³ 

But evil people are like thorns – all of them are tossed away, for they cannot be held in the hand.

Turn back from me, all you who behave wickedly, ¹  for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping! ² 

When they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. ¹  Foreigners are powerless ²  before me;
