They grope about in darkness ¹  without light; he makes them stagger ²  like drunkards.

But you have said, ‘What does God know? Does he judge through such deep darkness? ¹ 

when ¹  he caused ²  his lamp ³  to shine upon my head, and by his light I walked ⁴  through darkness; ⁵ 

But when I hoped for good, trouble came; when I expected light, then darkness came.

Remember your covenant promises, ¹  for the dark regions of the earth are full of places where violence rules. ² 

Are your amazing deeds experienced ¹  in the dark region, ²  or your deliverance in the land of oblivion? ³ 

the plague that comes in the darkness, or the disease that comes at noon. ¹ 

You make it dark and night comes, ¹  during which all the beasts of the forest prowl around.

In the darkness a light ¹  shines for the godly, for each one who is merciful, compassionate, and just. ² 

If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me, ¹  and the light will turn to night all around me,” ² 

I realized that wisdom is preferable to folly, ¹  just as light is preferable to darkness:

to open blind eyes, ¹  to release prisoners ²  from dungeons, those who live in darkness from prisons.

He drove me into captivity ¹  and made me walk ²  in darkness and not light.

He has made me reside in deepest darkness ¹  like those who died long ago.

he reveals deep and hidden things. He knows what is in the darkness, and light resides with him.

Now from noon until three, ¹  darkness came over all the land. ² 

Now ¹  when it was noon, ²  darkness came over the whole land ³  until three in the afternoon. ⁴ 

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, ¹  to guide our feet into the way ²  of peace.”

Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather ¹  expose them. ² 

But you, brothers and sisters, ¹  are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would.
