When ¹  I hear a reproof that dishonors ²  me, then my understanding ³  prompts me to answer. ⁴ 

But when Elihu saw ¹  that the three men had no further reply, ²  he became very angry.

“Will the one who contends ¹  with the Almighty correct him? ²  Let the person who accuses God give him an answer!”

She persuaded him ¹  with persuasive words; ²  with her smooth talk ³  she compelled him. ⁴ 

A relative ¹  offended ²  is harder to reach than ³  a strong city, and disputes are like the barred gates ⁴  of a fortified citadel. ⁵ 

A foolish child ¹  is the ruin of his father, and a contentious wife ²  is like ³  a constant dripping. ⁴ 

Drive out the scorner ¹  and contention will leave; strife and insults will cease. ² 

When you argue a case ¹  with your neighbor, do not reveal the secret of another person, ² 

Do not answer a fool according to his folly, ¹  lest you yourself also be like him. ² 

Answer a fool according to his folly, ¹  lest he be wise in his own estimation. ² 

Where there is no wood, a fire goes out, and where there is no gossip, ¹  contention ceases. ² 

Like charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, so is a contentious person ¹  to kindle strife. ² 

But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

A dispute also started ¹  among them over which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. ² 

He was speaking and debating ¹  with the Greek-speaking Jews, ²  but they were trying to kill him.

So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, ¹  the circumcised believers ²  took issue with ³  him,

for he refuted the Jews vigorously ¹  in public debate, ²  demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ ³  was Jesus. ⁴ 

nor can they prove ¹  to you the things ²  they are accusing me of doing. ³ 

Some have strayed from these and turned away to empty discussion.

All the people throughout all the tribes of Israel were arguing among themselves saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies. He rescued us from the hand of the Philistines, but now he has fled from the land because of Absalom.
