Take a man’s ¹  garment when he has given security for a stranger, and when he gives surety for a stranger, ²  hold him in pledge. ³ 

But ¹  no stranger had to spend the night outside, for I opened my doors to the traveler ²  –

The heart knows its own bitterness, ¹  and with its joy no one else ²  can share. ³ 

Let another ¹  praise you, and not your own mouth; ²  someone else, ³  and not your own lips.

One law and one custom must apply to you and to the resident foreigner who lives alongside you.’”

to whom alone the land was given when no foreigner passed among them. ¹ 

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

I was a stranger and you did not receive me as a guest, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’

Then they too will answer, ¹  ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not give you whatever you needed?’

Your land is devastated, your cities burned with fire. Right before your eyes your crops are being destroyed by foreign invaders. ¹  They leave behind devastation and destruction. ² 

Do not neglect hospitality, because through it some have entertained angels without knowing it. ¹ 

The same law will apply ¹  to the person who is native-born and to the foreigner who lives among you.”

When a foreigner resides ¹  with you in your land, you must not oppress him.

¹ “Foreigners will take care of ²  your sheep; foreigners will work in your fields and vineyards.

I will give it to foreigners as loot, to the world’s wicked ones as plunder, and they will desecrate it.

After ¹  consulting together they bought the Potter’s Field with it, as a burial place for foreigners.

Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain ¹  that your descendants will be strangers ²  in a foreign country. ³  They will be enslaved and oppressed ⁴  for four hundred years.

One statute must apply ¹  to you who belong to the congregation and to the resident foreigner who is living among you, as a permanent ²  statute for your future generations. You and the resident foreigner will be alike ³  before the Lord.

For foreigners ¹  attack me; ²  ruthless men, who do not respect God, seek my life. ³  (Selah)

My child, ²  if you have made a pledge ³  for your neighbor, and ⁴  have become a guarantor ⁵  for a stranger, ⁶
