You must not return an escaped slave to his master when he has run away to you. ¹ 

Slaves ¹  rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their power. ² 

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.

“If a man strikes his male servant or his female servant with a staff so that he or she ¹  dies as a result of the blow, ²  he will surely be punished. ³ 

But later ¹  they had changed their minds. They had taken back their male and female slaves that they had freed and forced them to be slaves again. ² 

For the one who was called in the Lord as a slave is the Lord’s freedman. In the same way, the one who was called as a free person is Christ’s slave.

Although these false teachers promise ¹  such people ²  freedom, they themselves are enslaved to ³  immorality. ⁴  For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved. ⁵ 

He sent a man ahead of them ¹  – Joseph was sold as a servant.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, ¹  we are not children of the slave woman but of the free woman.

Do you not know that if you present yourselves ¹  as obedient slaves, ²  you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or obedience resulting in righteousness? ³ 

So she said to Abraham, “Banish ¹  that slave woman and her son, for the son of that slave woman will not be an heir along with my son Isaac!”

“If a man strikes the eye of his male servant or his female servant so that he destroys it, ¹  he will let the servant ²  go free ³  as compensation for the eye.

“‘If your brother becomes impoverished with regard to you so that he sells himself to you, you must not subject him to slave service. ¹ 

Everyone was supposed to free their male and female Hebrew slaves. No one was supposed to keep a fellow Judean enslaved. ¹ 

I purchased male and female slaves, and I owned slaves who were born in my house; ¹  I also possessed more livestock – both herds and flocks – than any of my predecessors in Jerusalem. ² 

So he said, “Cursed ¹  be Canaan! ²  The lowest of slaves ³  he will be to his brothers.”

Then his brothers also came and threw themselves down before him; they said, “Here we are; we are your slaves.”

But everyone’s servant who is bought for money, after you have circumcised him, may eat it.

Luxury is not appropriate ¹  for a fool; ²  how much less for a servant to rule over princes! ³ 

and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.
