Tremble with fear and do not sin! ¹  Meditate as you lie in bed, and repent of your ways! ²  (Selah)

I was stone silent; ¹  I held back the urge to speak. ²  My frustration grew; ³ 

But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

And if someone sitting down receives a revelation, the person who is speaking should conclude.

In light of all this, ¹  how can you still hold back, Lord? How can you be silent and continue to humiliate us?

Be silent before the Lord God, ¹  for the Lord’s day of judgment ²  is almost here. ³  The Lord has prepared a sacrificial meal; ⁴  he has ritually purified ⁵  his guests.

But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, ¹  “Are you the Christ, ²  the Son of the Blessed One?”

Thus ¹  they were unable in the presence of the people to trap ²  him with his own words. ³  And stunned ⁴  by his answer, they fell silent.

the women ¹  should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak. ²  Rather, let them be in submission, as in fact the law says.

But ¹  Jesus rebuked him: ²  “Silence! Come out of him!” ³ 

“Teach ¹  me and I, for my part, ²  will be silent; explain to me ³  how I have been mistaken. ⁴ 

“Refrain from talking ¹  with me so that ²  I may speak; then let come to me ³  what may. ⁴ 

My God, I cry out during the day, but you do not answer, and during the night my prayers do not let up. ¹ 

When I refused to confess my sin, ¹  my whole body wasted away, ²  while I groaned in pain all day long.

I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done. ¹ 

But the Lord is in his majestic palace. ¹  The whole earth is speechless in his presence!” ² 

Now the passage of scripture the man ¹  was reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he did ²  not open his mouth.

A song, a psalm of Asaph. O God, do not be silent! Do not ignore us! ²  Do not be inactive, O God!

Even a fool who remains silent is considered ¹  wise, and the one who holds his tongue is deemed discerning. ² 

I ¹  post watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they should keep praying all day and all night. ²  You who pray to ³  the Lord, don’t be silent!
