I was in peace, and he has shattered me. ¹  He has seized me by the neck and crushed me. ²  He has made me his target;

He brings an end to wars throughout the earth; ¹  he shatters ²  the bow and breaks ³  the spear; he burns ⁴  the shields with fire. ⁵

He takes his battle position ¹  and shakes ²  the earth; with a mere look he frightens ³  the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; ⁴  the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. ⁵ 

then you scare me ¹  with dreams and terrify ²  me with ³  visions,

for evil men will lose their power, ¹  but the Lord sustains ²  the godly.

He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore-fig trees with driving rain.

“Moab will be crushed. Her children will cry out in distress. ¹ 

Instead, this is what you must do to them: You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars, ¹  cut down their sacred Asherah poles, ²  and burn up their idols.

Rise up, ¹  Lord! Deliver me, my God! Yes, ²  you will strike ³  all my enemies on the jaw; you will break the teeth ⁴  of the wicked. ⁵ 

The sacrifices God desires are a humble spirit ¹  – O God, a humble and repentant heart ²  you will not reject. ³
