They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?”

Instead your hearts are filled with sadness ¹  because I have said these things to you.

I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me. ¹ 

We all growl like bears, we coo mournfully like doves; we wait for deliverance, ¹  but there is none, for salvation, but it is far from us.

“When ¹  you fast, do not look sullen like the hypocrites, for they make their faces unattractive ²  so that people will see them fasting. I tell you the truth, ³  they have their reward.

Now I rejoice, not because you were made sad, ¹  but because you were made sad to the point of repentance. For you were made sad as God intended, ²  so that you were not harmed ³  in any way by us.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. ¹ 

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”

especially saddened ¹  by what ²  he had said, that they were not going to see him ³  again. Then they accompanied ⁴  him to the ship.

For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.

When the people heard this troubling word ¹  they mourned; ²  no one put on his ornaments.

Then the Levites quieted all the people saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy. Do not grieve.”

he sets ¹  the lowly ²  on high, that those who mourn ³  are raised ⁴  to safety.

“Oh, ¹  if only my grief ²  could be weighed, ³  and my misfortune laid ⁴  on the scales too! ⁵ 

For now ¹  you have become like these streams that are no help; ²  you see a terror, ³  and are afraid.

Only his flesh has pain for himself, ¹  and he mourns for himself.” ² 

Have I not wept for the unfortunate? ¹  Was not my soul grieved for the poor?

My harp is used for ¹  mourning and my flute for the sound of weeping.
