¹ He puts my feet in shackles; he watches closely all my paths.’

in order to protect him from times of trouble, ¹  until the wicked are destroyed. ² 

He brought them out of the utter darkness, ¹  and tore off their shackles.

The Lord spoke ¹  to Jeremiah a second time while he was still confined in the courtyard of the guardhouse. ² 

They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, because the crowds ¹  regarded him as a prophet.

Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.

But Peter ¹  said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!” ² 

At daybreak ¹  there was great consternation ²  among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.

Receiving such orders, he threw them in the inner cell ¹  and fastened their feet in the stocks. ² 

Then he brought them outside ¹  and asked, “Sirs, what must ²  I do to be saved?”

except ¹  that the Holy Spirit warns ²  me in town after town ³  that ⁴  imprisonment ⁵  and persecutions ⁶  are waiting for me.

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus ¹  for the sake of you Gentiles –

I am appealing ¹  to you concerning my child, whose spiritual father I have become ²  during my imprisonment, ³  that is, Onesimus,

Both of them, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream ¹  the same night. ²  Each man’s dream had its own meaning. ³ 

Reach agreement ¹  quickly with your accuser while on the way to court, ²  or he ³  may hand you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the warden, and you will be thrown into prison.

He motioned to them ¹  with his hand to be quiet and then related ²  how the Lord had brought ³  him out of the prison. He said, “Tell James and the brothers these things,” and then he left and went to another place. ⁴ 

Are they servants of Christ? (I am talking like I am out of my mind!) I am even more so: with much greater labors, with far more imprisonments, with more severe beatings, facing death many times.

As you are going with your accuser before the magistrate, ¹  make an effort to settle with him on the way, so that he will not drag you before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, ²  and the officer throw you into prison.

But Paul said to the police officers, ¹  “They had us beaten in public ²  without a proper trial ³  – even though we are Roman citizens ⁴  – and they threw us ⁵  in prison. And now they want to send us away ⁶  secretly? Absolutely not! They ⁷  themselves must come and escort us out!” ⁸ 

The warden put all the prisoners under Joseph’s care. He was in charge of whatever they were doing. ¹
